The areas where organizations stumble more often than not is a long and disheartening list: installing enterprise-wide software; implementing strategic plans; downsizing; cross functional coordination; mergers & acquisitions; process improvement; driving down decision making. Clearly it is time to question our problem solving process!

There is no one-size-fits-all strategy for problem solving. And 40 years of working with organizations has taught me that there are actually 6 types of problems... but only 6! Each type requires its own path of investigation, and each has its own unique outline for a solution. Presuming the wrong problem type usually leads to a flawed intervention.

Most problem solving today focuses on solutions without thoroughly understanding the core elements of the problem. We look for an OTS package, a “best practice”, or rely on a round of brainstorming.

The 6 problem types are:

  • Problems that are Puzzles
  • Problems that are Too Rich
  • Problems with Uncertainties
  • Problems that are Disputes
  • Problems that are Dilemmas
  • Problems that involve Complexities

Participant Takeaways:

  1. Ability to summarize the essence of the problem to the client
  2. Clarity about where to look, what to investigate
  3. Know what questions to ask
  4. Identify who needs to be involved
  5. Confidence in designing unique solutions

Technology Requirements:
This session will be conducted through Zoom. Log-in instructions will be sent prior to the event.

About the Speaker:

Over the last 40 years Jerry has provided organizational development consulting to about 450 companies. His background is in Sociology, but he is also a licensed Marriage & Family Therapist. Jerry often worked with companies trying to solve the same problem for the 2nd or 3rd time, which made him focus on the process itself rather than just the problem at hand.
