A Mentor Coach will provide coaching, training, and technical assistance to Head Start and Early Head Start teaching staff in the grantee and delegate agency programs; support and engage teaching staff through individual coaching sessions, trainings and small group discussions; and do related work as required. Head Start serves low-income families with preschool aged children, three to five years old. Early Head Start serves pregnant women and families with infant and toddler aged children, birth to three years old.

Examples of Duties:
Provides individualized coaching, training and technical assistance for teaching staff in Head Start Grantee and Delegate Agencies.
Develops and implements small group trainings and discussion groups for teachers on various research based child development topics, such as meaningful child-teacher interactions, phonemic awareness, alphabet knowledge and oral language comprehension, and mathematical skill acquisition.
Observes teachers in classroom and provides constructive feedback; models appropriate and high quality interactions with children in a classroom setting.
Facilitates the development of Individualized Coaching Plans for teaching staff.
Monitors progress of teaching staff with fulfillment of goals outlined in coaching plans.
Conducts individual coaching sessions with assigned teachers.
Maintains regular communication with assigned teachers via telephone and email.
Works with Mentor Coach Team to ensure consistency of services delivered and to share coaching strategies and challenges.

Knowledge of the following is highly recommended:
Head Start Program Performance Standards and Early Learning Framework.
Early childhood development and teaching.
Early childhood curriculum including Creative Curriculum, Houghton-Mifflin, and Open Court.
Classroom Assessment and Scoring System (CLASS) assessments and practices.
CSEFEL/Teaching Pyramid Practices.
Working with adult learners
Problems and needs of low-income families.
Staff development and training.
Working with diverse learners.
Principles of supervision and training.


Skills required to perform this job:
Develop and implement individualized mentor coaching strategies for teaching staff.
Provide training workshops for Head Start teaching staff.
Work effectively with teaching staff serving low-income children and families.
Speak and write effectively.
Ensure the proper development and implementation of individual coaching plans.
Maintain records and prepare reports.
Deal tactfully and courteously with teaching staff.
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
Train and coordinate the coaching work of assigned staff.
Analyze quantitative data.

Training and Experience: 

Any combination of training and experience likely to provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities would be qualifying.

Required: 

A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education or related field; at least five years of work experience in Early Childhood Education and experience in mentor coaching, training, and/or supervising staff. 

Certification on the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) instrument is highly desirable.

NOTE: Those selected will be required to submit verification of citizenship or legal right to work in the United States at time of employment. Employment is subject to successful completion of an employment physical examination.
